Counselling

A child’s worries may seem trivial to an adult but to a child, his/her whole world may be collapsing. The ability to learn is often hampered because of the stressful changes and feelings they are experiencing as they grow. Middle school students are developing physically, while questioning their world, their friendships, and themselves. They are an emerging self-identity. The school counsellor works as a member of a team, with students, school staff, parents and the community in areas relating to social, emotional, behavioural, and intellectual development. The focus at Journey is to create a caring, supportive climate and atmosphere for young adolescents to safely gain social and academic success. Middle school counselors support the learning process and promote academic achievement. School counseling programs at Journey are individualized, group and classroom wide; needed for students to achieve optimal personal growth, acquire positive social skills and values, set appropriate career goals and realize full academic potential on the road to becoming productive, contributing members of our community. The middle school counselor holds a master’s degree in counselling and certification as a teacher. Ms. Campbell is our counselor and can be reached at school or by email Charmain Campbell, Counsellor

Integration Services (IS)

The IS department works closely with communities, departments, and organizations to help  integrate students with behaviour, learning, social, physical, and emotional needs as well as gifted students  into the mainstream classroom environment.  When a student shows signs that they require support, our team will assess and try to accommodate the student’s needs.  Each student with a Special Needs designation is required to have an Individual Education Plan (IEP).   The IS department is responsible for collaborating with parents, staff, and specialists to develop a  student’s IEP to cater to each individuals student’s needs.  Each IS teacher is required to have a diploma or Masters in Special Education, and a Bachelor in Education.

Our Educational Assistants (EA) are an integral part of our team.  Each EA is trained and certified in working with special needs students. EA’s work closely with teachers and specialists to ensure all students’ needs are met.
